Rally to Resume Parliament (Waterloo Region)

Host: Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament (Waterloo Region Chapter)

The Waterloo Region Chapter of Fair Vote Canada attended the Waterloo No Prorogue Rally on 23 January 2010 hosted by Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament

People of Waterloo Region and surrounding area gathered at Waterloo Town Square to protest Prime Minister Harper's prorogation of parliament, and urged him to resume parliament now.

Fair Vote Canada did not organize or sponsor this rally, but the Fair Vote Canada Waterloo Region Chapter was there to provide information on Electoral Reform, Fair Voting, and regaining true democracy in Canada.

Since 19 April 2006 the Waterloo Region Chapter of Fair Vote Canada has served Waterloo Region: Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and the surrounding townships. Residents of other nearby locations (such as Guelph) are also welcome to participate in the Chapter's activities.

We organize many chapter activities using the Internet. The Waterloo Region Chapter has a page on Facebook and is “@fairvotewrc” on Identi.ca and Twitter.

  • Our low-volume, announcement-only list is called "fvc-wat-announce". On this list we announce chapter events, activities, and meetings. Everybody who wants to keep informed of chapter activities should subscribe to this list by visiting the fvc-wat-announce list signup page.
  • We also have a discussion list called "fvc-wat-disc" for event planning and discussion amongst participants. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS — FEDERAL ELECTION FAIR VOTING CAMPAIGN

Another federal election is upon us and the executive members of the Waterloo Region Fair Vote Canada Chapter have developed an activity plan to raise awareness about the need for electoral reform during the campaign.

We are focusing on two tasks:

  1. Sending letters to local newspapers linking electoral reform to the federal election
  2. Attending all candidates' debates to ask questions about electoral reform and to distribute literature

2009 Annual General Meeting of the Waterloo Chapter

Date: Monday, 8 June 2009 at 7:00pm to 9:00pm
Location: Community Meeting Room, second floor, Zehrs store at the Laurentian Power Centre, 750 Ottawa Street South, Kitchener, ON (map)

The meeting included elections to the board of the Fair Vote Canada Waterloo Region Chapter. A few board members stepped down, including chapter co-chair Angela Yenssen, so several spaces were available on the board for interested members.

The meeting also featured a roundtable discussion on the future of the electoral reform movement in Canada in light of the recent referenda in Ontario (2007) and British Columbia (2006, 2009). This discussion will included Angela Yenssen's research for her Master's degree in Public Policy, Administration and Law regarding voting rights in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Fair Vote Ontario — A Public Forum, 21 February 2009

Hosted by: Law Faculty, University of Toronto, Flavelle House, 78 Queen's Park Crescent West, Toronto

Angela Yenssen organised car pool arrangements from Waterloo Region.

This forum examined strategies for Ontarians to help advance voting reform at the federal and provincial levels.

Leading up to the Provincial Election on 10 October 2007, the Waterloo Region Chapter of Fair Vote Canada ran a vigorous campaign.

Here is some of the Waterloo Region media coverage about fair voting, the chapter, and the Ontario Citizens' Assembly.

Some good educational materials are available on the government's Citizens' Assembly Website. In particular, the "Classroom" section contains a lot of good information.

TV Ontario is publishing Video and Podcasts from the Citizens' Assembly plenary sessions.

Here are some possible activities the chapter might take on. They were brainstormed during our April 2006 AGM.
