As we look at the United States, it’s increasingly clear we don’t want to follow their path towards a two-party, polarized political system.
As Andrew Coyne recently remarked, advocating for proportional representation:
“There are things we can do to buttress our internal strength. One of those things certainly is democratic reform…The way our electoral system divides us against each other is just criminal.”
Research is clear. Proportional representation can make Canada stronger.
Countries with proportional representation are less politically polarized.
They have higher economic growth, healthier populations and stronger environmental protections.
Countries with proportional representation systems outperform countries with winner-take-all systems on every measure of democracy.
Politicians need to hear that Canadians want action on PR.
If we all work together, we can ensure that MPs hear from constituents about proportional representation. Not just immediately after elections, but all the time.
Can you join our PR letter writing team?
Here’s how it works:
1) Sign up to be part of our PR letter writing team.
As part of our team, you are committing to writing one personal letter a year for proportional representation to your MP. (You can write more often if you want, but we will prompt you once a year!)
2) We will reach out to you at some point in the coming year asking you to send a letter to your MP calling for action on proportional representation.
We’ll space it out so MPs will get a stream of letters from constituents about proportional representation throughout the year, instead of a bunch all at once.
Every month we’ll send an email to a different group of supporters on the team asking them to write a letter.
So after you sign up, you might not hear from us for a while asking you to write to your MP – but we will be in touch!
3) We will provide you with some suggested content to make it easy to write your letter.
We don’t want everyone sending an MP the same letter.
Personal letters can make the most impact. This is what lets MPs know proportional representation is an issue in their community.
We will send you suggestions to make it as quick and easy as possible to get your letter sent!
We want every MP to be saying to their party leadership:
“Proportional representation is an issue that I hear about all the time from my constituents!”
