Historic Nova Scotia "majority" government not elected by the majority (June 10, 2009)
The hoopla over the election of the first NDP government in Nova Scotia has obscured an important fact: the majority of Nova Scotia voters did not vote for the party that was awarded a substantial majority of seats. See FVC press release.
BC-STV referendum setback, but the electoral reform discussion will continue (May 13, 2009)
The BC-STV proposal attracted only 39% support in the May 12 BC electoral reform referendum, but both reformers and opponents agreed that the electoral reform discussion will continue in British Columbia.
"In the weeks leading up the referendum, thousands of BC voters engaged in this public deliberation about improved representation, government accountability and how to make our votes count," said Shoni Field, a former member of the 160-member Citizens' Assembly, which in 2004 recommended BC-STV as the best electoral system for BC. "Of course, we are disappointed that BC-STV didn't pass, but we are confident the discussion does not end here. In addition to those who voted for BC-STV, the opposition campaign repeatedly emphasized that many of their supporters also want some type of electoral reform."
Fair Voting BC, the sponsor of the British Columbians for BC-STV campaign, will be holding a conference on June 20-21 in Surrey, BC, to assess the referendum campaign and plan next steps for electoral reform activities in BC.
