Two days before the election M. Trudeau says that he’s willing to open up the electoral reform file whilst also asserting that he’s still unwavering in his support for ranked ballots.

The NDP is also unwavering in its support for PR… er… MMP.

If only there was a design of proportional representation that used ranked ballots, maybe then there could be a compromise consensus reached… one that eluded the ERRE.

    Wait a minute… isn’t there a system…

Someone with some clout — someone who was serious about “any system so long as it’s PR — should tell Jagmeet about STV. He could broker a deal with Trudeau. They could both be winners (not to mention the rest of us).

The DM might have to be small to begin with but ny attempt to lower it would disenfranchise voters and be rejected in a Charter Challenge. And moved to increase DM could easily happen.

How about it Fair Vote? Now — like today — might be the time to walk the talk, eh.

Does anyone know why the NDP favour MMP over something else?

Another interesting point Mark is that there is a system that uses both ranked ballots and is MMP and it was called Rural Urban Proportional in the last BC Referendum.

I imagine Wilf and the Law Commission had something to do with it… making MMP and PR synonymous.

Trudeau supposedly opposes PR. But what he really has problems with is MMP. Me too.

Here’s the thing. If you had two systems in your pocket and you had to make a deal with someone who didn’t like one but was OK with aspects of the second (or even more if you paid attention before 2015) which one would you pull out of your pocket and offer him?

Fair Vote is OK with any system so long as it’s PR, right? Why not Singh. Why not talk to him??
