Toronto Chapter and GTA
The Toronto Chapter was the first Fair Vote chapter and has its own unique style of advocacy in tune with the city. The chapter usually has an information table each year at Pride Day Community Fair, and does leafleting and outreach at various events such as the Labour Day parade, Word on the Street, street fairs, town hall meetings—where ever Torontonians gather.
Early in 2009 the Chapter sponsored under the leadership of Dave Meslin a pizza ballot event in support of the BC-STV campaign at the Transac Club. Various members of the chapter had special projects: Sarah Lambert started a students’ chapter at Ryerson University; Linda Sheppard organized a sold out conference on voting reform in February 2009; Gary Dale appeared on Television advocating reform; and June Macdonald organizes a letter writers’ group.
The Chapter as a whole worked with Vote Toronto to successfully push for a ban on corporate and union donations for elections to Toronto City council and is participating in the Better Ballots initiative, examining different ways of electing City councillors. Our flyer on the topic
