BC election results do not reflect voters’ wishes, says Fair Vote Canada

May 15, 2013

The BC election results are in, and the headlines are screaming:

• NDP support collapses
• Liberals win strong mandate
• Green Party elects first provincial legislator

But all these headlines are misleading, according to Canada’s leading citizen’s movement for electoral reform. Fair Vote Canada (FVC) says the real stories contained in the BC election results are these:

• One political party gets 100% of the power, even though most people voted against them
• Voters robbed by winner-take-all voting
• Opposition crippled by distorted election results

New Legislation: Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The new Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (NFP Act) establishes a new set of rules for federally incorporated not-for-profit corporations in Canada. These new rules replace Part II of the Canada Corporations Act, the law that has governed federal corporations for nearly a century. “Using a ranked ballot for mayor is a small and simple change that will help make our local elections more fair and friendly, ” said RaBIT Coordinator Dave Meslin. “We can reduce vote-splitting and strategic voting, making the election experience more inclusive and less polarising.”

A new poll from Environics, commissioned by Leadnow.ca, shows that a majority of Canadians from across the political spectrum support bringing in a form of proportional representation for Canadian elections.

The Environics poll showed support for proportional representation spread broadly across party lines, with 77% support from self-identified Liberal voters, 61% from Conservative voters, 82% support from NDP voters, and 93% from Green Party voters. Only 18% of all poll respondents oppose such a change.

Mar 31, 2013

The Green Party will not be running a candidate in the upcoming by-election in Labrador, and that's partly due to Liberal leadership candidate Joyce Murray.

Murray approached the Green Party and the NDP and suggested that the three parties cooperate to avoid splitting votes and inadvertently re-electing Conservative MP Peter Penashue, who stepped down because of a scandal over improper campaign donations.

Martha Hall Findlay endorses proportional representation

Mar 22, 2013

Martha Hall Findlay has become the second Liberal leadership candidate to sign Fair Vote Canada’s Declaration of Voters’ Rights, making electoral reform one of the few issues that has raised sparks in an otherwise dull leadership campaign.

Justin understands you want proportional representation, but you don’t get it.

Mar 5, 2013

Is Justin Trudeau listening?

In a remarkable exchange during the Liberal leadership debate in Halifax on Sunday, March 3, Justin Trudeau conceded that most Canadians want proportional voting reform, but he won’t give it to them because “too many people don’t understand the polarization and the micro issues that come through proportional representation.”

Justin gets it, but you don’t.
