To the editors of The Hill Times:

Re: Trudeau supports PR, even though he would have lost his seat under it - The Hill Times, Jan. 13, 2012

“We should seize this historic opportunity for us to formally embrace the principle of proportional representation as an absolute necessity for the future of Canada,” says Justin Trudeau (Trudeau supports PR, even though he would have lost his seat under it – Hill Times, Jan 14).

Fair Vote Canada asks: Will faux reform lead to fireworks at the Liberal Convention?

Jan 11, 2012

We may see fireworks at the Liberal Party of Canada’s convention this weekend, with leading Liberals apparently at odds over a resolution calling for a change to the voting system.

The resolution before the convention calls for the Liberal Party to implement “a preferential ballot” for national elections, presumably in the current, single-member ridings. The system, known as Alternative Vote (AV) or Instant Runoff Voting (IRV), is used in Australia to elect their House of Commons.

Happy Holidays and a Proportional New Year!

Dec 23, 2011

Dear Friends:

We wish you all a very happy holiday season and a proportional new year!

Now you may ask, what does he mean by a proportional new year?

It’s a simple holiday wish for equality, fairness, and an accurate representation of our Canadian values and beliefs in our parliamentary system. This is denied to Canadians under the antiquated, winner-take-all voting system called “first past the post”.

Tom Kent, 1922 – 2011

Nov 18, 2011

Fair Vote Canada today mourns the death of Tom Kent, journalist, civil servant, and champion of electoral reform.

Tom Kent was a senior civil servant under Prime Minister Lester Pearson, and chief architect of many of the social programs that Canadians today consider central to our national identity, such as Medicare and the Canada Pension Plan. He remained an influential liberal advisor into the Trudeau years.

Saskatchewan election outcome shows Canadian voting system stuck in the 19th Century

Nov 8, 2011

For immediate release
November 8,2011

In Monday's provincial election in Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Party got 64.21% of the votes, the NDP got 31.99%, and the Green Party got 2.88%.

Simple logic would suggest that if there are 58 seats in the Saskatchewan Legislature, then surely the Saskatchewan Party must have won 37 seats, the NDP 19, and the remaining two seats will have gone to the Green Party.

In fact, thanks to the magic of first-past-the-post voting, the Saskatchewan Party won 49 seats (84.48%), the NDP 9 seats (15.52%), and the Green Party was shut out as usual.
