Democracy Week

Democracy Day
15 September 2011
The first annual Democracy Week will be held in communities across Canada from 12 to 18 September 2011. This week is intended to extend the celebration of the annual United Nations International Day of Democracy on Thursday, 15 September 2011.
Democracy Week is being initiated by Fair Vote Canada. It is about participating, celebrating, understanding, and improving our Canadian democracy. Participation in Democracy Week is not an endorsement of electoral reform.
The United Nations International Day of Democracy website explains:
Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.
We are inviting organizations with diverse goals and membership, from all points on the political spectrum, from local community groups to national organizations, to participate by holding their own event during the week. These events could range from a speaker or forum on a political issue of interest to their group members or the community, to an artistic contribution such as a dance or film.
