Civil society and campuses
In Fall 2009, Fair Vote Canada will be launching a new program to bring fair voting to civil society organizations and university and college campuses.
Thousands of NGOs, community groups, co-ops and campuses hold elections each year to elect their boards, councils, commissions and various positions. Most use winner-take-all voting systems when fair and proportional voting would be more appropriate.
In the near future, Wilfrid Laurier University will likely become the first Canadian university to use a fair and proportional voting system – STV – for student government elections.
FVC National Council member Sean Geobey, program coordinator for the civil society program, hopes to build on the Wilfrid Laurier success story.
