Background
L'Association pour la revendication des droits démocratiques (ARDD) is
a group of individuals who have initiated an action asking the Quebec
courts to declare that the first-past-the-post voting system used for
elections in Quebec does not satisfy the right to vote and the
equality provisions guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms. A successful decision would impact the voting system in the
whole country.
Fair Vote Canada has been granted intervenor status in this case, and
so has Elizabeth May MP, leader of the Green Party of Canada.
The lower courts have decided that the issue is one that can be
decided by the courts, but have not granted the appellants' request.
The ARDD is appealing the case to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Although the group has benefited from considerable free legal help,
there will still be a substantial cost to preparing and presenting
this case, in the neighbourhood of $70,000. The ARDD is now soliciting
donations, and Fair Vote Canada has agreed to provide $10,000 in
matching funding.
