Happy Holidays and a Proportional New Year!

Dec 23, 2011

Dear Friends:

We wish you all a very happy holiday season and a proportional new year!

Now you may ask, what does he mean by a proportional new year?

It’s a simple holiday wish for equality, fairness, and an accurate representation of our Canadian values and beliefs in our parliamentary system. This is denied to Canadians under the antiquated, winner-take-all voting system called “first past the post”.

A major poll, conducted by Environics Research for the Council of Canadians in 2010, found that 62 per cent of Canadians support "moving towards a system of proportional representation (PR) in Canadian elections."

So a simple Holiday wish for Canadians in 2012 is for solid progress towards a modern, fair voting system where the number of seats a political party wins in Parliament is in proportion to the number of votes they receive. Most developed countries have been using proportional voting systems for most of the last century!

Happy Holidays and a Proportional New Year!
