Bob Rae Joins Fair Vote Canada’s National Advisory Board

Fair Vote Canada is pleased to announce the addition of former Liberal Leader Bob Rae, PC, OC, OOnt, QC, MP, to its National Advisory Board.“Canadians need to know that their votes will really count. This means moving beyond our first past the post system”, says Rae, a long-time supporter of adding proportionality to Canada’s electoral system.

Former Liberal leader Stephane Dion has also recently added his endorsement on Fair Vote Canada’s website of a moderately proportional system for Canada.

“Bob Rae’s depth of experience and commitment to electoral reform will be of great benefit to our Advisory Board as we build our campaign for the 2015 federal election,” said Doug Bailie, president of Fair Vote Canada.

Rae and Dion echo the views of a strong majority of Canadians, who believe that their sincere votes should count, and that percentage of seats a party receives in Parliament should roughly match the percentage of voter support they received. A recent Environics poll, backing up a decade of such polls, showed an all-time high of 76% of Canadians support proportional representation for Canadian elections.

Rae joins other distinguished Canadians from across the political spectrum on the Advisory Board, including David Suzuki, Lloyd Axworthy, Maude Barlow, Ed Broadbent and Hugh Segal, at a crucial time, as Fair Vote Canada builds momentum to launch its biggest campaign ever: to make the 2015 federal election a mandate for proportional representation.
